Statistics Packages
An excellent Java script based free package is Google Analytics. It has all the inherent disadvantages of web based solutions:

  • Band width speed problems
  • Difficulty in segmenting populations retroactively
  • Quality control problems with ensuring that code is on new pages (there are services you can buy which will monitor this for you)

We recommend log file analysis even though it is harder to set up. As you analyze, it is easier to drill deeper into things that catch your attention. Since each solution has different strengths it is useful to use more than one package. One of the solutions we use is ClickTracks.

Search Engine Position Checking
It is very time consuming to check your sites ranking for many keywords on various search engines. One solution is to use software to do this. Warning: there are some search engines that prohibit the use of software to check positions. Make sure you use a package that won't violate their terms of service

Keyword Checking
The importance of focusing on the correct keywords is very important. Many times the keywords you think people are using to find your site are not the ones actually used. Checking your log files is important but it won't reveal which keywords are used by the people who don't find your site. WordTracker tracks keyword usage across many engines and Google Keyword Tool tracks keyword usage by Google users. These tools are not always exact so always test the results.
