The SMX conference in Jerusalem featured Google’s John Mueller. What was really interesting was the disconnect between Google’s emphasise on the user experience and mobile sites. By mobile site I am referring to smartphones as opposed to feature phones or tablets.
There are compelling reasons to use responsive sites–easier management and a simple URL system are two important factors.
However, in many cases we have recommended to our clients to have dedicated smartphone websites. This solution can increase the conversion rate significantly. Super fast load times and less text are two important factors on mobile that can be difficult for a responsive site to accomplish.
Mobile Websites in the SERPS
If you do have a super fast mobile smartphone website, John Mueller told us that Google does not consider this as a ranking factor. Although sometimes the mobile version may turn up in the search results.
Currently the mobile user may get the desktop result in the SERPS but arrive on a mobile version of the website after clicking. Not exactly cloaking but a distant legitimate cousin.
It will be interesting to see how Google changes its positions as mobile develops and becomes even more important.
